Following in The Heart of Darkness tradition, Edward Docx’s new novel, The Devil’s Garden, is a thrilling exploration of human nature. It tells the story of Dr Forle, a scientist based on a river station deep in the heart of the South American jungle. Forle’s research is interrupted by the arrival of a ruthless Colonel and sinister Judge, drawing him into a world of brutality and corruption. Docx’s previous novels are The Calligrapher and Self Help, which was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2007, and won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. Scientist Johan Oldekop is currently researching biodiversity and indigenous peoples. Join them for a fascinating discussion which promises to touch upon theories of evolution, religion and anthropological research in the Amazon. This event is presented in association with Manchester Science Festival.
