Poet Jen Hadfield has been commissioned by Manchester Literature Festival to respond to Manchester Art Gallery’s new exhibition A Highland Romance: Victorian Views of Scottishness, exploring issues of national identity in the run up to Scotland’s referendum on independence. Jen Hadfield is the author of two critically acclaimed collections of poetry, Almanacs and Nigh-No-Place, which won the TS Eliot Award in 2008. Her startlingly original work has been greatly influenced by the landscape and language of the Shetland Islands where she has lived for the past six years. At this unique event she will read her commissioned poems against the backdrop of the art that inspired her.
