Two sisters return to their grandfather’s house in rural Galicia, the place they fled to as children, but their arrival wakes up long-dormant ghosts and memories. When American actress Ava Gardner arrives in Tierra de Chá to shoot a film, the Winterlings have a chance at stardom – will their past get in the way of their future?

Cristina Sánchez-Andrade is a journalist and literary critic who has published three previous novels – her third, Your King No Longer Walks this Earth, won the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Prize and has been translated into English and Portuguese. Recently translated into English, The Winterlings was Herralde Novel Prize Finalist in 2013. ‘Cristina Sánchez-Andrade is, without question, one of the most powerful female voices Spanish literature has produced,’ said La Razón.

Join us for an evening of fiction in translation and discussion chaired by Michael Schmidt, poet and founder of Carcanet Press, presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes.
