Black and white sketch drawing of Thomas de Quincey

THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED.

Manchester is a buzzing, regenerated city full of hedonism, culture and sport, yes? Look a little deeper however and you’ll see the gothic undertow writhing below its glossy surfaces. Mostly we’re blinded by the busyness of everyday life but this walking tour will show you a little of what is hidden in plain view.

Manchester was home to John Dee, Shakespeare’s model for Prospero and gave birth to Thomas De Quincey, author of Confessions of an English Opium-Eater. The industrial revolution turned the old order upside down and brought down horror and retribution on our dark satanic streets. There’s more here than you know. Come and find out what really happened on the streets of our modern city.

Meet Manchester Cathedral, South Porch.
