The women of Manchester were at the forefront in the fight for women’s suffrage. Lydia Becker from Chadderton organised the first public meeting on the subject, and inspired the young Emmeline Pankhurst. The first suffragette arrests were at the Free Trade Hall. Even before the fight for the vote, Manchester women like Elizabeth Gaskell reported on social conditions, and two poor sisters from Spinningfields showed Friedrich Engels a thing or two about life in the new industrialised city. Our Manchester bluestockings have provided politicians, legal experts and the country’s first sex manual. The first female to be elected to the Royal Academy was from Manchester, the first female Poet Laureate lives here, and both Jane Eyre and Harry Potter were conceived here. Come and discover how Manchester’s women have been getting things done.

Meet outside Central Library (ends at People’s History Museum)
