“I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn't be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.”
Story Explorers are the children who are part of the reading groups that we run in three primary schools in Manchester. They participate in monthly reading groups where they are encouraged to read for pleasure, dipping their toes into books that they already love as well as discovering new literature that is not so familiar. They then go out into their school tasked with the challenge of encouraging their peers to get reading. Alongside this they run their own blog where they review the books they have read and share reading tips with colleagues from other schools.
The overall aim of the project is to increase literacy and enjoyment of reading, with recognition of the fact that extensive reading and exposure to a wide range of texts make a huge contribution to children's educational achievement.
