In 1960, Maya Angelou organised an event called Cabaret For Freedom in New York to raise funds for the civil rights campaign of Martin Luther King Jr. St John’s Church and Young Identity will be hosting their own Cabaret For Freedom to raise funds for refugees and asylum seekers living in Old Trafford.

An evening of poetry and live music celebrating the work of one of our most prolific and profound poets, Cabaret For Freedom will include performances from Shirley May, SuAndi, Isaiah Hull, Segun Lee-French and Young Identity writers alongside special guests. Presented in partnership with Black History Month and Manchester Literature Festival.

Proceeds from this event will be donated to the St John’s Centre to support their work with local refugees and asylum seekers

Young Identity will be running Maya Angelou inspired writing workshops in September and October at St John’s Centre in Old Trafford. For more information and to book a place please contact Event Organiser James Walmsley at manctopia@mac.com
