Book jacket of one of Charles Dickens' books

Charles Dickens’ Bleak House starts with a one-word sentence: ‘London.’ Dickens probably considered starting Hard Times with a similar one-word sentence: ‘Manchester.’, but he hedged his bets by calling his mythical Northern city ‘Coketown’. Dickens spent much time in Manchester, appearing at The Athenaeum and Free Trade Hall, and hanging loose with Harrison Ainsworth. Join Ed Glinert on this tour of the great novelist’s hangouts and recall the best of times, the worst of times.
